Laser practitioners Susan Zavell, R.N. and Kile Law share some tips for maintaining a successful laser practice

With laser treatments on the rise, laser practice owners face the challenge of creating and maintaining successful businesses that stand apart from local competitors. Laser practitioners Susan Zavell, R.N., and her husband Peter Zavell, M.D. opened the Heavenly Skin Aesthetic & Cosmetic Laser Center in Florence, South Carolina in August 2003. Since its inception, Heavenly Skin Aesthetic & Cosmetic Laser Center has proven itself a successful and thriving laser practice, as a result of the Zavell's efforts to create a patient-centric practice with a relaxing and comfortable environment.

Among the important factors in managing a successful laser practice is the ability to accommodate the individual and unique needs of each patient. “Customer satisfaction is key to having a successful practice,” Susan said. “We tailor treatments based on each patient's specific needs which ultimately enhances each patient's experience at Heavenly Skin.” Susan also stresses the importance of knowing the practice's limitations, thus preventing unrealistic expectations and creating a strong sense of trust with the patients.

In addition to patient satisfaction, Susan also believes that strong media relationships have contributed to the success of Heavenly Skin. “We've been able to establish some great relationships with local television and newspaper media contacts who have covered our practice and technologies many times,” she said.

Like Susan and her husband Peter, spa owner, and medical spa consultant Kile Law and husband Michael Law, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon, have also recognized and employed some key elements necessary in maintaining a successful laser practice. Their co-owned laser practice, Blue Water Spa, was established in January 2003 and is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Blue Water Spa has been recognized as one of the top four medical spas in America by American Spa.

“Retaining a knowledgeable staff is critical in achieving a successful laser practice. It is important to include staff in regular training and to ensure that all employees stay up-to-date on continuing education,” Kile said. Susan agreed, “You should never stop learning — techniques change and settings are tweaked. All practitioners should attend the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) annual meeting to keep up with the latest trends and developments.”

The Laws have focused heavily on providing patients with a variety of lasers to treat different conditions and to complement aesthetic services. The husband and wife team have gained the trust and confidence of their patients by offering them a true laser center, instead of simply an office with one laser available for any and all conditions.

Kile has worked hard to create a spa-like environment within Blue Water Spa, helping patients to feel calm and relaxed during laser treatments. “Our patients are our clients and our clients are our patients,” Kile said. “We treat our patients with the utmost care and we go the extra mile to ensure their comfort and safety during their visit at Blue Water Spa.”
